The success of Comic Con

Over the four day Comic Con extravaganza, 135,000 aficionados poured into the San Diego Convention Center and spent $68 million inside the center. The con generated an estimated $3 million for the City of San Diego and a cool $163 million for local businesses. While there were complaints about overcrowding and line control, Comic Con went off without a hitch.

The media blitz attracted Hollywood legends like Stephen Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola as well as the premiere of the feature film Cowboys and Aliens starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. As an attempt to keep Comic Con in San Diego and with consistent exponential growth expected, Mayor Jerry Sanders has been working on a convention center expansion plan. The project is expected to break ground in December 20, 2012 and is estimated to cost $500 million.
